Buisson, Ferdinand
(1841-1932)
   educator, political figure
   Born in Paris, Ferdinand Buisson served as inspector-general of public instruction (1878) and is the author of a large Dictionnaire de pédagogie (1882-87). Beginning in 1880, he worked unceasingly in the ministry of jules ferry, and then as a Radical-Socialist deputy (1902-14; 1919-24), for the secularization of public education, free education, obligatory professional training, as well as women's suffrage. President of the Ligue des droits de l'homme (1913-26), Buisson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1927.
